Have you ever noticed truly how many ads we see online? Not just when we search something on google, and the first thing that pops up is an ad of some kind, but also on actual web pages. Some are even before we try to load the page. and then they make you click on it to skip past, but it only sends you to a website about that product.
Ads are showing up everywhere in our lives, and not only on media. However, i will be mainly focusing on those we see in media.
Ads are something that is used to sell a product, through a short description about how good the product is. this could be something like a tv commercial, a short ad on the radio, or a pop up on CNN. however, ads are beginning to show up more and more. and not only this, but certain ads depict products that we have looked for in the past, on something such as Amazon. most people don't buy a product from an ad as soon as they see it, but it still eventually influences them to buy it. the next time we see the product in a store, we immediately think good things about it and end up purchasing it.
also, ads are becoming even harder to skip. they show up after we lose a level on some game and allow us to continue playing. but after the video for it plays, we try clicking the screen and it immediately sends us to a website for the item we just saw. this also happens when loading a web page, and an ad shows up with a skip here button. we press the button, only to realize that we had to wait fifteen seconds or something and then it whisks us off to some web page one more.
ads have become so much more effective lately simply due to the rate at which we use media. we are online a lot of the time and we rely heavily on media for our lives. relying on this, companies are able to send out ads that almost everyone will see. and even if we are not the people to purchase the product, there are another 1,000 people out there who will. this will only lead to more ads being created and the cycle simply repeats itself over and over again, until ads dominate every inch of our phone screens.
in order to stop this, we need to be able to rely not so heavily on media. if the time we spend online goes down, not only will our real life relationships improve, but we won't be wasting money and time on products we don't need that an ad causes us to want or think that we can't live without. as we buy the products less and less, less ads will be shown and eventually, we can move past this time dominated by social media and advertisements
