for our critical thinking class, we read an article on how teens are beginning to have more and more anxiety. i agree with all the points made by the article, in that this modernizing age is a huge cause for more anxiety in our lives. this is also driven by our needs, as in we want something as soon as possible. i think the point of "bad news" affecting this is valid as well, but not complete.
in my opinion, almost all forms of news or media affect our anxiety and make it worse. media gives us all of these false expectations of how we need to be, and pressures us to fit in. we try to live up to these impossible expectations that we create for ourselves through media or tv or news, but never can reach them. and the entire time that we try we just end up becoming more and more anxious as we try to become what we think we should be.
however, the article still makes good points. in this age, we have come to expect that we get what we want, pretty much as soon as we want it. when we don't get this, for whatever reason, we become even more anxious. we end up getting an unrealistic ideal for something being what we need rather than what we want.
not only this, but our jobs and retirement plans are causing us even more anxiety, according to the article. apparently, jobs used to be much more stable than they are today. obviously, having an unstable job where we can get fired upon a moments notice would give us much more anxiety. the same thing goes for the modern retirement plans. now we use our own savings, rather than a company plan. so we not only get anxious from losing our jobs, but paying for about 1/5 of our life with a job that we don't even know if we'll keep.
also, the article makes an extremely strong point on hearing bad news. we hear bad news very often within our lives, and it has a strong effect on us. whenever we hear something bad, we become more anxious. and why wouldn't we? who wants to hear something bad that had happened, and upon hearing it, feel much worse and stress out even more
this modernizing age is causing for us to become even more anxious, and its mainly due to how we live, in that we have set expectations, which all leads to an even higher level of anxiety
